USB Sticks cannot contain multiple partitions by default. It is
however possible to create multiple partitions on an USB stick by
modifying and installing a new driver which disguises the USB stick as
a USB hard drive. It is highly recommended to backup all data on the
USB stick before continuing.

Users who want to create multiple partitions need a file called
Hitachi Microdrive which contains the new driver that we are going to
modify first and install afterwards. Unpack the package to a new
directory on the hard drive. The first step is to find out the exact
name of the USB stick that we want to use that way. The information can
be found in the Windows Registry. Pressing [Windows R], typing
[regedit] and hitting [Enter] will load the Registry editor.

The information are located in subkeys of the Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR. The name of the
USB stick can be found by clicking on the [+] sign in front of the key.
All USB devices should be listed there. The name of the USB stick can
be copied by left-clicking the subkey, right-clicking afterwards and
selecting Copy Key Name from the context menu.

The key needs to be modified because it contains the full path. The
best way to do that is to paste the contents into a text editor and
remove all chars before Disk&Ven.

Now that this is done we need to copy the part that is left into the
Windows Clipboard again by selecting the text and pressing [CTRL C]

The driver information needs to be edited in the next step before
the new drivers for the USB stick are installed. Load the file
cfadisk.inf in an text editor and locate the [cfadisk_device] section.

Replace the chars IDE\DiskIBM-DSCM-11000__________________________SC2IC801
in the first line with the name of the USB stick that you are going to
use. Remove every other line in the category so that only the line with
our modified USB stick name is shown in there.

The driver is now prepared and can be installed for the USB stick.
Open the Windows Control Panel, the System category and there the
Hardware tab. A click on Device Manager will load the Windows Device
Manager which lists the computer hardware. The USB stick should be
located in the Disk Drives category. Right-click the USB stick and
select Update Driver from the context menu.

The Hardware Update wizard should pop up. Select the option Install from a list or specific location in the window and click next.

Check the Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install option in the next window and click next again.

A click on Have Disk in the next window will open a file browser.
Locate and pick the file cfadisk.inf that has been modified previously.
Clicking on OK will check the driver and show a warning message that
the driver is not digitally signed. Press next on that screen.

Ignore the warning message and continue by clicking Yes. Windows
should now start the installation of the driver for the USB stick and
display a message that it finished the installation.

Windows is now requesting a reboot of the system to load the updated
drivers properly. The USB stick should now be recognized as a hard
drive. This makes it possible to create multiple partitions on the USB
stick with a software partition program.

Please note that only systems with the updated drivers will
recognize the additional partitions. Connected the USB stick to a
computer without the modified drivers will only show the first
partition of the USB stick.

The output of scanned documents are usually images. A big drawback
about this – You cannot copy or search text in the scanner generated
image file. This is where OCR tools are used. OCR or Optical Character
Recognition is a technique used to translate images of text into
editable text.

Here’s how we
can rip text from an image using OCR utilities in Windows. There are
free and commercial tools to do this. Lets look at both of them.

The Free Option
1.
Create a folder named OCR in your D directory. Off course you can
choose to create it any where you want. I’m just using D:\OCR for this
demo.

2. Copy the image file (that contains some characters)
to the D:\OCR folder. The image can be of any format i.e PNG, TIF, JPG,
PNM etcetera. For the sake of brevity, let’s call the image Demo.png.

3. Download Gocr.exe Windows binary [The source files of GOCR are available at sourceforge. We would only need the Windows binary though]. GOCR or JOCR is a Free and Open Source OCR engine which creates a text file from an image file.
Copy the downloaded gocr045.exe file to D:\OCR.
As GOCR only accepts image files of .pnm format, we need to convert our Demo.png to Demo.pnm.

4. Convert the image to PNM format. You can skip this step if your image file is in pnm format.
We’ll use ImageMagick to convert image files to pnm format.
Download ImageMagick for Windows. Install it.

a. Start Windows Command Prompt [Start >> Run. Type CMD and press enter].
Navigate to D:\OCR from the Command prompt and type -
convert demo.png demo.pnm

This converts Demo.png image file to Demo.pnm.
ImageMagick can convert files from JPG, PNG, TIF et cetera formats to PNM. It supports conversion from over a hundred formats.
b. Place the Demo.pnm file to D:\OCR.

5. Open up the Windows Command Prompt [Start >> Run. Type CMD and press enter].
Navigate to D:\OCR.
Type gocr045 -i Demo.pnm -o Demo.txt

This will create a text file Demo.txt with most of the text from Demo.pnm image file.

The Commercial Option
There are a few options here, but I have read ABBYY FineReader is a good one. You can download and try it free for 30 days.
[Download APPYY Fine Reader]

Web video is so popular that Internet Providers throughout the world are feeling the network bandwidth
increase and trying to find ways to lower the bandwidth consumption.
The popularity of web video caused a strong increase in web video
downloaders and converters that download videos from video portals to
the local computer.

TubeMaster (via Download online video using TubeMaster Plus)
is one of those applications. The portable application supports more
than 100 video portals including the ever popular Youtube and
Dailymotion but also some unsuspected ones like Hulu, IGN or ESPN. Not
all web video portals could be tested because some will only show the
videos to users of specific countries. A test of downloading web video
from Hulu would be greatly appreciated.

The application uses its own browser that can be used to display the
video portal websites. Videos will be automatically downloaded when
they are played on the portal. This is unfortunately the only way to
download videos from the various websites.

It is still a comfortable way to download web video. Besides the
option to load the websites directly users can also use the search
engine included to search for various on single or all web video
websites.

A maximum of 500 search results can be displayed. The videos cannot
be downloaded directly from the search. A click displays additional
information about the selected web video and an option to load the
video on the video portal’s website from where it will be automatically
downloaded when it starts playing.

Another option is the mp3 search which leaves the user in the dark
from where the files are coming. Quicktime is needed to play and
download the mp3.

Videos can be automatically decoded which is the default option in
TubeMaster. The user can choose between various video codecs and stop
the conversion.

Tubemaster supports adult web video sites as well but that option is

Just four days ago a post entitled How To Sort Feeds In Google
Reader Alphabetically Again was published on Ghacks that helped users
of Google Reader to sort their feeds listing alphabetically again. The
default sorting is alphabetically which becomes void when the user
begins to drag and drop feeds around in Google Reader. Four days ago
there was not a way to enable the option to sort feeds alphabetically
again.

The only way to enable alphabetically sorting again was to create
new folders and add the feeds to them. New folders sort the items
alphabetically by default.

A comment by Fernando mentioned that Google added a new Options
links beneath the feed list next to Manage Subscriptions in Google
Reader that makes it possible to select the default method of sorting
the feeds. The option can be set to “alphabetical” or “my order”.
Selecting alphabetical will sort all feeds alphabetical again. One
interesting aspect of the choice is that users who choose alphabetical
will not be able to move feeds around in the same folder in Google
Reader. It is still possible to move them to another folder though.

If alphabetical has been selected as the default sorting option then
the feed items will stay alphabetical in their folder and new items
will automatically assume the correct alphabetical position in the
folder that they are moved into.

This finally gives everyone who was frantically looking for a way to
enable alphabetical sorting in Google Reader a way to enable it again.

Megapixels are a measurement of one thing and one thing only: how many millions of pixels a camera’s sensor is capable of shooting at a time. And while having a lot of megapixels is essential for printing larger pictures, it is a poor indicator of overall picture quality. More important is the quality of the image sensor and lens. And while some camera phones now boast 5 or more megapixels, cellphone manufacturers tend to skimp on crucial components.

Most camera phones use cheap sensors (like the ones found in inexpensive webcams) and substandard plastic lenses (instead of the glass ones found in better cameras). Intensifying the problem is the fact that very few camera phones have an optical zoom, relying instead on a digital zoom that reduces picture quality.

The key, then, to taking decent camera-phone shots is to follow the same basic photographic principles as for a stand-alone camera, but with an eye to the camera phone’s particular weaknesses.

The first step is to make sure you have decent lighting. Camera phones rarely have flashes (the few that do generally use low-power LEDs), and they tend to incorporate sensors with poor light sensitivity. You’ll have to compensate by getting as much illumination on your subjects as possible. The more light you have, the sharper your pictures will look. And try to keep the light source (whether it’s the sun or an indoor bulb) in front of your subjects—otherwise they could end up looking like silhouettes.

The worst problem with camera-phone photos is blur. Unlike larger, single-lens reflex cameras, cellphones have no physical shutter. Instead, they use software to tell the camera how long to record light coming through the lens. But because the internal processor and software are often slow, the lag between when you press the button and when the picture is captured can be a second or more. The longer this process takes, the greater the opportunity for you to shake your hand and introduce blur. To defend against this, try leaning against a wall or pole for support. Even better: Turn your arm into a makeshift tripod by propping your elbow on a tabletop. And when you press the shutter button, don’t move until the finished photo pops up on your screen.

Lastly, don’t forget about good composition. As with any camera, try to follow what is called the rule of thirds, which is an easy way of making simple shots more interesting. Imagine your frame has four lines going through it like a tic-tac-toe board. Instead of putting your subject in the center of the screen, use the points where these lines would intersect as bull’s-eyes. Photographers claim this adds intensity and balance to shots, though it’s best used as a guideline, not a formula

LAN Chat’s key advantage is its clean and intuitive user interface. In fact, you won’t even need to learn anything to use it. There is no need to provide a username or password. You are automatically logged in. Just start it and talk.
There is only one screen! This screen displays a chat room where logged in users can send messages. These messages can be viewed by all. A list of all logged in users is also displayed.

Where can this be used?
This will be very handy in offices when internet connection is down. Software programmers can use this to share snippets of code.

What’s missing?
As of now, there is no way to share files with this. An option to share files through LAN Chat would be great.

LAN Chat is Windows Only. It is Free! Check it out.
